Simple Homemade Almond Butter

This almond butter is smooth, creamy, and best of all, homemade. If I knew making my own almond butter was this easy, I would have been doing it this whole time!

With only some almonds, a pinch of salt, and a dash of patience, I created my own homemade almond butter, and it was SO worth it. We all know food always tastes better when it’s homemade with love, but honestly, the savings are pretty great too. Buying a bulk bag of almonds is just about always cheaper than buying a big jar of almond butter – at least where I am, and this way you know exactly how it’s made and what you put into it. It’s also a great opportunity to get creative and add your own flavours if you’re feelin’ funky.

Preheat your oven to 350° F, and spread out your almonds evenly on a baking tray. Once oven is hot, place the almonds in the oven for about 10 minutes to roast. This helps bring out the flavour and natural oils of the nuts, so your almonds will blend more easily and your butter will be extra tasty! When your almonds are finished roasting, allow them to cool off until they are warm but not dangerously hot, and throw them into your food processor.

Now blend, blend, and blend some more! Seriously, this part takes patience. I blended for what felt like forever before I got anywhere close to smooth, creamy, delicious almond butter, but eventually it did happen! Have faith, my friends, you will get there too. The almonds will go from whole nuts, to an almond flour kind of mixture, and finally, almond butter! Some other recipes I’ve seen mention that the almond mixture may form into a ball somewhere in between the almond flour and almond butter stages, but mine seemed to skip that part of the process.

Note: keep an eye on your food processor, and if it’s getting too hot, give it a little break to cool down – it’s doing a lot of work!

Once your almonds have buttered, add in a little bit of salt. Blend one more time on high to mix everything completely, and pour into a mason jar or other sealable container to store. If the almond butter is hot, allow it to cool before closing the lid. Refrigerate and store for up to 2 weeks (if it lasts that long!)

By:

Ingredients
  • 3 cups almonds
  • 1/2 tsp salt
Directions
  • Step 1 Preheat oven to 350° F. Spread almonds out on a baking tray, and roast for about 10 minutes. Let cool until they are warm but not dangerously hot, and add to food processor.
  • Step 2 Blend on high for a fairly long time. Be patient, and make sure to take breaks if your food processor is getting too hot. I had to blend my almonds for about 30 minutes to get them nice and creamy, but the timing will vary depending on your food processor.
  • Step 3 Once the almonds have become a smooth butter, add in the salt and blend one more time to combine. Scoop into a mason jar or other sealable container, and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. If the almond butter is hot when you finish, allow it to cool before sealing and storing.
